WILSON  FINAL

Thursday Nov 20, 2008  7pm  U of W
# 1 Massey vs # 2 Kennedy

These two teams opened the regular season against each other.  The game was won by Massey in the Last seconds of the game where they marched the ball the length of the field with under 2 minutes to go for the 21-20 win.  Both teams have been the class of the league for most of the regular season with only one hiccup from the Clippers in a one point loss to Belle River.  Here is the breakdown:

Offense:

The Mustang offense has shown what the Canadian, 3 down football should look like in high school football.  Although not every team has a QB like Austin Kennedy at the helm.  He has been the best player in all of WECSSAA football this year beating teams with both his arm and his legs.  The key to stopping the Mustang offense will be to keep Kennedy in the pocket, if he can get to the edge where he has the option of running or passing its game over.  When he pulls up to pass look for DeAndre Lewis, Jaiph Albu and Ian Griffin to come down with the ball.

The Clippers offense is another team that can spread you out.  The difference with them is that they like to spread you out and run on you.  The QB duo of Weingarden and Veenstra will pose problems with the Mustang defense because both can do some special things out of the QB spot.  The Clippers also have a couple of backs who can take it the distance anytime they touch the ball, Akin Oyedele and Cristian Mayorga.  These guys are the biggest backs but are very tough to bring down because they each have great feet and speed to burn.  When the Clippers go to the air look for Mitch Matthews to be the main target as he will be a matchup problem with anyone who tries to cover him.

EDGE: Massey

Defense:

The Mustang defense has been decent most of the year but there have been a couple of games where the offense has had to bail them out and outscore the other  team.  They will have their hands full with trying to contain the spread option attack of the Clippers.

The Clippers defense has been very stingy this year and we at the top of the league in forcing turnovers.  This is an area where the Clippers will have to excel, they need to force more turnovers they give up.  Containing Kennedy has to be their main priority, make someone else beat them.

EDGE: Kennedy

Special Teams:

The Massey specials have been solid all year with a couple of TD returns, their kicking game may not be as strong as the Clippers.

The Clippers have a couple of dynamic returners so the Mustangs will have to try some directional kicking to keep it out of their hands.  The Kicking game is very good for Kennedy which gives them the edge.

EDGE: Kennedy

Coaching:

This is a very interesting matchup of coaches.  The Mustangs have a young hungry coaching staff that will not be outworked by anyone.  The Clippers on the other hand have a very seasoned coaching staff who’s years coaching add up to more than the ages of the Massey coaches.  Both teams are coached extremely well and will have their teams prepared.

EDGE: Even

If this game comes down to special teams I think Kennedy will win the Wilson Crown.  But if the Mustangs can get their offense rolling it might be a long day for the Clippers.  In the end I think Austin Kennedy is too much for the Clippers and he gets it done again with some late game heroics.

Pick: Massey 23 Kennedy 20

# 3 Assumption vs # 4 St. Joes

These team met only once in the regular season with the Purple Raiders handling the Lasers 26-13.  Both teams have had their ups and downs during the season.  The Purple Raiders lost twice to arch rival Forster but played an outstanding game in the semi finals and hammered the Spartans 28-0 to reach the final.  The Lasers meanwhile stared the season with three straight losses then won two.  In doing so the Lasers were forced to play L’Essor in a play in game for the final playoff spot and they came up big first beating L’Essor to get in the playoffs and then knocking off the first place Leamington Lions in the semi finals.

Offense:

The Purple Raiders are running a version of the single wing with the jet sweep as one of their best plays.  If the defense cannot figure out who has the ball there could be a lot of room to run for the Raiders.  Cam Goddard is the main weapon for Assumption as he can score from the backfield running the ball, on the receiving end of passes or anytime the ball is kicked to him.  Taking Goddard out of the game will be job one for the Lasers.

The Lasers started the year with a spread attack but as the weather has worsened they have gone to a full house backfield running a veer type offense.  This gives them angles on blocks and allows their running backs to see the holes as they come open and be able to find the cutback lanes.  Josh Steward this the key cog in the Laser attack as he can both throw and run to win a game.

Edge: St. Joes

Defense:

The Purple Raiders have an aggressive defense and will need to maintain their gap integrity and not over pursue the ball or they will see the Laser running backs cut back on them.

The Lasers have a couple of different defenses that they use in different situations.  If you are running the ball they will crowd the box if you are going to pass they will drop 8 into coverage.

Edge: Assumption

Special Teams:

The Kicking games are not specialties for either team if it comes down to a field goal I think the St. Joes kicker has the better chance of making it.  The return game goes to the Raiders, if Goddard gets his hands on the ball he can take it to the house.

Edge: Even

Coaching:

Both teams have young coaching staffs and are doing well building their respective programs and look to have long coaching careers ahead of them.

Edge: Even

Based on the way the regular season went the Purple Raiders should be the favorites in this game but I have a feeling that the Cinderella season of the St. Joes Lasers continues and they win their first Football Championship.

Pick: St. Joes 21 Assumption 14
